Now that looks like a nice package and more suited to my 'needs' than the S1000R I recently rode. Not sure it'd be as flickable as the ST though, which is something I prize.
I've got a F800S but this has changed my opinion on the look of boxer engined BMW's. One fine looking BMW motorbike ....

Ross, I was fortunate to have a loan of the RnineT earlier this year. The ST was in for a service so the only bike I could borrow was the R9T.
First thing I noted was the body movement or vibration as the boxer engine caused this, it was only occurring when idling. During the ride the engine was very responsive, the width of the bars is very noticeably wider and the bike was very stable and I was surprised by the lack of wind noise around my helmet.
This was a very nice bike, and if I was thinking of changing it would be a contender. BMW reckon the R9T will soon have a fairing as an option, though it does not have a fuel gauge and other things the ST has. But all in all it was a fun bike to ride and very light, lighter than the ST to manually maneuver around.
Mmmm, I dont think they would do a low version of the R12RS though... It would be great for you though Ross[:)]
I rode the 1200R during a 800 service. Really nice but I'm not buying up no mo.

The R1200R has never appealed to me for some reason. The R1200RT was at the top of my list for a while, as it is a fantastic bike and ridiculously good fun to ride, but I think it would be a pig on my daily commute into London. The R1200RS seems to have all the bits I like about the F800ST, as well as the extra power and touring capabilities of the larger bike. Oh, and I just read that gearshift assist *is* available as an option, so BOOM!
It would be nice if it came with cruise control, though.

I like to look at other bikes but as soon as I try to get my leg over I find they're too high for me. I like put my two feet firmly on the ground.

A power windscreen is standard on the RS. As an option there is a adjustable foot rest/controls for some user configurability. This comment from BMW which directs attention to wind/weather management I'm thinking comes from the negative feedback from GT owners, and looks really attractive to me. That they dared call this 'perfect' looks hopeful. Plus, the screen and mounting approach appears to be very amenable to switching out for a taller tour screen as needed. Plus it appears to incorporate the 'break-the-vacuum' design to reduce turbulence immediately behind the screen. The standard seat also is slightly lower than GT's, so this helps lower CoG a little as well as well as lower the rider's head a little which will help w/ wind management...a little.Quote:

This machine looks like my next and bike--sounds like I'll know around next April/May when they arrive locally per my dealer's comment. It will have to offer strong wind protection w/ or w/o a taller screen. One thing I really like about this bike over RT is it's just a little leaner/lighter/simpler than RT which to me still looks like more body work and larger cases than I'm interested in. To me it's too much fairing, too much tupperware as they say. Plus I've come to like the sportier ergos more having put 6K miles on my GT so far. I'd be happy to make the RS's tail end look like a bigger than the thong that the stock bike sports!
I saw another video that makes it look like the screen is manually adjustable, a little like the MRA Vario screen, so I don't think it's going to be electrically adjustable.

I think you're right Ross I swear I read that it had a power screen but now I'm not seeing it, just references to an 'adjustable' screen--my wishful brain must have added something to that, or maybe it was in some article somewhere. Well, I'm a tiny bit excited to report that I've put down a holding deposit to secure my R1200RS Sport. The lease on my F800ST finishes in August, so I'll be swapping it over then. The RS will be hitting our roads in May / June, and supposedly about 3/4 of the UK's allocated stock has already been accounted for, so I needed to get in now to make sure there'd be one available for me when I need it.
I'll be getting a Lupin Blue one, with the Premium Package, so that will include whizzbang gizmos like cruise control, ASC, TPM, additional Dynamic Ride Mode, and Gearshift Assist Pro (which allows you to make clutchless downshifts as well as upshifts). It also comes with a luggage rack, GPS preparation and a centre stand, but I don't really think I'll need those, so might update the order closer to the time and use the money saved to get the Keyless Ride option. That sounds like my cup of tea!
There's still time for me to change my mind and go for the K1300R, but as much as I long for one of those monsters, I just know the RS makes more sense.

If my wallet (S.W.M.B.O) will allow it I will trade in my current R1200R for a second hand (Black?) R1200RS if (and only if) again: if our family budget will allow it in 3 to 4 years time.
But after the suspension upgrade and the new clutch plate I've been forking for in the last year riding the R1200R is no penalty either so I'm just going to [ride] that for now.

It looks like I might not be getting rid of the F800ST after all.
In December we got a Piaggio MP3 Yourban 300 for my wife. She's heading back to work from maternity leave next month, and she was anxious about the fact that her return rail commute takes her the best part of 2 hours from door to door. We worked out that a motorcycle commute would only take around 50 minutes, so that would give her more precious time with our baby, who is going into nursery when my wife goes back to work.
She doesn't have a motorcycle licence, but we found out that in the UK you can ride the 3-wheeled scooters on a car licence, and she was very excited about the prospect. However, with the demands of a tiny person taking up most of her time, she just didn't have enough time to practice riding, and so she wasn't confident on the scooter, and was terrified of tackling the motorway section of the commute to work. She almost scrapped the whole idea, but then decided to get some training. She ended up booking onto a Direct Access training course, and on her second day she was put on a geared 600cc bike. Well, she loved it so much, she doesn't really want to ride the scooter anymore!

So we thought about it for a bit, and I asked her if she'd be interested in taking over the F800, while I move up to the R1200RS. She is currently ridiculously excited about that prospect. She can't wait until she gets her licence so she can test ride it. I've taken the precaution of buying her a lowered seat, so she has a fighting chance of reaching the ground when she comes to a stop... [8)]
So anyway, if things work out as we hope and she passes her test next month, I'll be able to push forward getting the R1200RS to when they're first available in May or June, rather than having to wait until August, and then we can flog the scooter and have a 2 BMW (and 1 track bike) garage. Sweet!!

I've been having a few similar thoughts about my wife and my ST... what was your trick? :D Actually I think one of the Sertao style bikes would probably work better for her, I might save the ST for my eldest boy so we can go riding together some time (he's only 11 ;-) )

They're still not available here, so no test rides just yet. I did take the R1200R out for a run a few weeks ago, since it's sometimes described as being 'the same bike from the headstock back'. It cemented in my mind that the new water-cooled Boxer has to be in my next ride, and all the controls and 'feel' of the bike were just what I want. The Gearshift Assist Pro is amazing, and I liked the new instrument cluster too. But I'd never go for the naked R as I felt buffeted and blown away, even only going around 60mph on a nice twisty bit of road. I definitely want the better weather protection of the RS.
This also helped with my agonising over the K1300R. As much as I'd love one, I think the ride on the R1200R confirmed that I don't think I'd cope on a pure naked bike. This also removes the R NineT and S1000R from the shortlist. :)
As for my wife on the ST, we both have some reservations, and I definitely see your point about the G650GS, especially if it's lowered. We're still waiting on her taking her test, so she hasn't ridden the ST yet. It's all going to depend on whether she feels comfortable enough - and confident enough - on the taller ST, even with the lower seat. I'm certainly not going to force her to take the bike if she doesn't feel like she can cope with it. I just hope she falls in love with it, like I did when I first climbed aboard my 2007 F800S.
I've got similar thoughts about weather protection, as a tall fella I've loved the ST for protection when tucking the legs in and on my torso but still feeling the wind in my hair so to speak :D.
I rode the wasser boxer in a GS and was amazed by it and will try the RS for sure, but like you say the wasser boxer has to be your next ride, that's how I feel about the in line 4... I rode the 1200S too and loved the sound + style of power and watched a fella effortlessly tear up the roads of Tassie on 1300r but like you couldn't go the 1000r and want a more touring style bike (I just saw Loiners post re his new 1200r and his thoughts on the RS he sat on) sooooo that means the XR for me! (but it's got a blinkin chain!). I think I'll like the gear shift pro, and I already love the Beemer cruise control...
I think for my wife who hasn't ridden much the wider bars and lower c.o.g of Sertao/single cylinder 650's would make it an easier bike to learn on? I don't know if that's true though. But good luck with your ST, that would be a sweet tale... I can tell your wife has excitement about riding motorbikes and that is waaay cool [thumb].

That promo video of the XR is stunning, isn't it? I've never really liked the look of ADV style bikes, though, so it's not for me. That said, the first few times I rode a 1200GS, I couldn't figure out what all the fuss was about, but finally when I had one as an all-day loan bike while the ST was in being serviced, I suddenly 'clicked' with the bike and spent the rest of the day with a silly grin on my face, and thinking that actually, I might see myself on one of these one day. :)
Yep, I've watched that promo video A LOT of times these last couple of weeks, my style of video too, beautiful countryside, pure focus on the bike and how it sounds and moves, no distracting music, I never like the videos where you don't get to here the bike ever???. And while the look of XR was weird to me at first it's actually grown on me a whole lot too.
But I'm going to test ride the RS this week or so, what colour have you gone for Scorch? I saw it in the white/blue and it looks fine! Bet you can't wait :D
I've always been a fan of the BMW grey colours, and my F800S was that amazing Lahar Grey Metallic, so I was initially drawn to the grey and black one. But my wife is the one who gave me the go-ahead to get the RS, and she preferred the Blue and White one, so that's that... [:D]
The more I see them, though, the more I like the blue and white, so it's all good! I'm jealous that other guys are already getting theirs, though, and still no sign of a delivery date for mine...
