Some here in Oz like to think we invented the "ute", but there is some doubt about that it seems. We certainly had hordes of them from the 40's on, even from unexpected quarters, such as Nuffield. My folks had an Austin A40 Ute in the 50's. http://www.outbacktravelaustralia.co...ory-of-the-ute

I always thought that the "ute" was invented by the "Beverley Hillbillies".

I might add that the city that I used to work for had a law dating back to the 1930's that prohibited "camp cars" from being parked on city streets during nighttime (gotta keep those Oakies moving along). As near as I could tell the law was no longer being enforced.

Attached are some car photos from the local high school car show. I also included two photos of a purple blob. It is so ugly that I just couldn't keep it to myself. It really should be under the "worlds worst jokes" section.

Some shots from Somerville Cruise Night this evening. Loved the Eldorado with suicide doors... and a very cool 225.

Love the Moggy, My parents used to have an Old English white one, our family of five used to go on camping holidays all across France in the early 1970's towing a Conway trailer tent, fond memories of the backs of our legs sticking to the vinyl seats and all shouting in unison "are we there yet!"

The Sunbeams are very cool looking cars. Absolutely love them and the similarly styled Triumph TR6

I saw a TR 6 not too long ago. There was a Triumph club parked outside the cafe I was at and I got to speak with the owner. I guess there is no main bearings on the original engine and the fix is to get bearings from a Spitfire to make improvements. All the member said their cars leak oil all the time….LOL

Some quick pics from this week's Somerville Cruise Night. My favorite was 1954 Bel Air (first pic). The last pic is the interior of a TransAm someone had all done-up like KITT of Knight Rider fame. The Hoff lives on!

I don't think the engine of the Tiger was all that exotic. I seem to recall that it was a standard Ford 260ci V-8, shoehorned into the Sunbeam Alpine chassis.

Over here in the 1960's any large capacity V8 (especially American) shoehorned into a car designed to take a pushrod 1600cc 4 pot engine was exotic!

Beautiful night out and some new/old hardware in Somerville this evening. Seemed to be heavy on American muscle-car era tonight. Sorry about quality on some pics... shooting one-handed.

I found this short cute video about the Enfield 8000 on the Royal Enfield motorcycle forum that I visit (so that I can find out what is going to break or fall off my bike next). Another piece of automotive history that I never heard of - and for good reason: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPBJpuz7qfM

John DeLorean lived not to far from my home... but a much higher rent zip code of course. My boss and I ran in to him once while heading to lunch.

It is good to live and work in Silicon Valley. Note that neither of these cars have license plates, which usually arrive in CA within two weeks of purchase. So I assume they must be the latest models. Nothing like having gold wheels on a red Ferrari.

I attended another car show yesterday and saw some cars that I hadn't seen before - such as a beer barrel car, a 1914 Oldsmobile touring car, a 1925 Dodge fire truck, the Ghost Busters station wagon, a 1974 Ferrari 246 OTS, a 1949 Cadillac, a 1960 Mercedes "Adventurer" and a 1930's Lincoln Zephyr. Photos attached.

The New Hope Auto show (www.newhopeautoshow.com) is annual two-day event in New Hope, PA. It is a large show with a different mix of cars/categories each day. We attended Saturday and this year's themes was the convertible. Weather was beautiful compared to last year- which was oppressively hot. Here is small sampling of some the cars:

There was a very nice 1970 Buick GS 455 which I could not get good shot of (was packed in) but which was one of my favorites. Actually, there were so many beauties. I wonder what the market value total would be for all the cars on display !!

Great cars Gerry. You have to admit they don't make them like that anymore.

Richard... they certainly don't. I love all the unique design elements and engineering over the years. The details of the interiors, controls, etc. Or the mechanicals of the Ford Skyliner's retractable hardtop. Surprised my wife has patience for me as I ogle from various angles. Kinda like when I went to the Barber Motorsports Museum. If I was alone, I could have spent two days there !

Two more interesting cars showed up at Alice's Restaurant today. A nice Avanti II and a very red and black Detomaso Pantera.

What I didn't appreciate were the 30 new "tuner" cars that passed by on their way to the coast. Every one of those things had little in the way of a muffler. In fact they all seemed to sound exactly the same. It sounded like a squadron of Harleys. Just as loud, but with a more obnoxious noise. You couldn't hear yourself think until the last of them passed by and the redwoods finally became quiet again.

Attached are photos of an interesting car that was parked along Skyline Boulevard, opposite Alice's Restaurant today. It is a very early Lotus race car that the owner says weighs only 1100 pounds. He also said that he feels safer riding a motorcycle than driving the Lotus. It sure looks basic and must be a ball to drive. Note that you have to remove the steering wheel to execrate yourself from the car.

Looks like a type 23, Shame about the modern twin cam engine, originally it probably would have been fitted with a Coventry Climax or Cosworth Ford engine.

Yeah not too modern though, LE Jetronic fuel system, cast exhaust manifold. Engine ruins the car.

    Great pictures all.

Some of the sights from last Sunday's Cars & Coffee gathering in Bethlehem, PA. First time I visited. The were featuring GTRs and had about 1-2 dozen on-hand including a couple right-hand steering older Skylines. Godzilla lives!! I did not get many GTR pics because the crowds around the vehicles. The Auburn is pretty cool too!

Those modern sport cars just don't look right in front of that old steel plant.

I recall seeing a Subaru 360 two-stroke trying to get up a freeway on-ramp during the 1970's Gas Crisis. Apparently Subaru thought it would be a good idea to import some of those things into the U.S. to take advantage of the interest by consumers at the time in high fuel mileage vehicles (such as motorcycles and scooters). It wasn't.

That's the correct model number-360. I had never seen one before. Wikipedia claims a 0-60 time of 37 seconds. No, not missing a decimal point there!

Old cars, Old POS. Some poor feller and his wife, he was 84 and she was 67 I think, died in Temple City a few days ago. Model A Ford hit a tree and burst into flames and they didn't get out. Kind of a reverse Pinto, gas in the cowl of the windshield and susceptible to rupture.
He had recently bragged about how well the car was running to a friend according to the LA Time report.
The old stuff looks neat and is worthy of admiration but I sure don't wanna drive any of that aging machinery. Do I miss my 1915 Model 'T' and my Ariel 650 Huntmaster...not really.
I do kinda miss my Jeeps, CJ5 and a CJ6. Those were fun and useful. Mid century and mostly modern design. Heck, they'd be 50 years old now. AAAAAHHHHHHHH!

Model A is no less safe than our bikes. We all make our choices and pick our passions. This gentleman's passion may have been his Model A....others airplanes or skiing or skydiving. Life is made to be lived...RIP.
