Hmm, I have always disliked August as it is a hot, dry month with things dying off. I have always liked April because it was the beginning of Spring.....

After a couple of days of heavy fog and drizzle along the coast south of San Francisco, I am finally seeing blue sky above me. It should be 65 degrees here today, but fog is expected to roll back in for the weekend - as usual.

Toasty warm 90+ degree day. May have been a record breaker. It's supposed to cool down a little but still be summer like for the next week.

Oz is expecting the coldest April weather ever across the whole country, this weekend. Some thing to do with minimal sunspot activity over the last few months influencing Antarctic wind patterns and pressure distribution drawing the cold air mass up from the South. How they can compute these things so accurately so far ahead has me beat, but they aren't often wrong these days!

Amazing weather. Sunny skies, about 15C in the mornings and up to 30 in the afternoon.. But here in Barcelona, Spain we are in quarantine, so it doesn't really matter ....

wet ! got my first taste of rain on two wheels today after almost 30 yrs of not - thought I would make it back before the clouds opened, and would have if I hadn't been stopped by road crews cleaning slide debris along my favorite canyon route - still, any ride on this new to me GT is better than no ride

The weather station at my house recorded .28 inches of rain this morning. That raised our total for this rainy season to 10.25 inches. Normal would be between 17 and 19 inches. I set my weather station to 0 at the beginning of November. We can only hope for more rain in the coming weeks.

-2.5 C with a heavy fog this morning, clearing to a sunny, very cool 13 C with a chilly sou-westerly breeze (straight off Antarctica)
Similar for tomorrow, but it could be frost tomorrow and get to 15 C.

109 degrees in Death Valley is a world record? I’m pretty sure the record there is 134 degrees. I’ve seen 121 on the big thermometer in Baker, about an hour south of DV.

CBS local news says that the fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains, south of San Francisco is now 10,000 acres with no containment. 6,000 homes are at risk and are, or have been, evacuated. The people evacuated were being sheltered at the Pescadero High School but due to the progress of the fire are now being moved to the Half Moon Bay High School. All of the towns in the mountains, all the way to the coast, are at risk of being destroyed.

Right now there are many fires in the Santa Cruz Mountains totaling 75 square miles as of this morning and there is still no containment. The towns of La Honda, Boulder Creek, Felton, Ben Lomond, Bonny Dune and Davenport have been evacuated and Pescadero is next on the list. And now Scotts Valley, located a few miles east of Santa Cruz, is being evacuated, where Zero motorcycles are built. Also being evacuated are parts of Half Moon Bay and Sky Londa, where Alice's Restaurant is located, although the restaurant was still open as of last night. I bet they will save the restaurant as a brand new fire station was built next to the restaurant and they sure won't want to loose that as it was just finished after two years of construction at a cost of millions of dollars. I also hope that the fire doesn't reach the hydrogen refueling station located across the street. That could be really bad as it seems to be packed to the gills with plenty of compressed hydrogen gas. (See my long-running H2 Highway thread.) All of the buildings and most of the campgrounds in Big Basin have also been destroyed by the fire, including the HQ building and the general store and museum complex across the street. It was also reported last night that UC Santa Cruz is being evacuated, which my youngest granddaughter is attending, at the moment virtually. 64,000 people are under evacuation orders in the area and they might not be allowed to return home for several weeks, according to officials today.

Oddly, this morning the weather at my home located 3 miles from the coast, is 58 degrees F, very foggy with moderate drizzle.

Down south, Tehachapi and Lucerne Valley residents told me the smoke from the Northern fires is obscuring the views of the surrounding mountains. In the LA Area we have smoke too but some of it is from firs in the area.
It's just hot, smokey and humid. Perfect!

Here are some photos that I took this morning when I and some friends had breakfast at Alice's Restaurant, located in the Santa Cruz Mountains, south of San Francisco.

We feel for you California! I heard that Oz is sending a contingent of fire fighters over to help out as a thankyou for the resources you sent us, particularly airborne, just 10 months ago. Amazingly, we had a serious bushfire outbreak in northern NSW last week and... heavy snow falls in Victoria. Fires in August do not bode well for our usual season start Nov./Dec.
Back off, 2020... you've made your point!

The weather in the San Francisco Bay Area is really weird today. We are completely covered by a thick layer of smoke that is making it so dark that street lights have remained on and I need to turn on the lights in my home just to get around. Two days ago it was 98 degrees here, now it is dark and 60 degrees F. I took the attached photos in front of my home at 1:30pm today.

Same in San Jose, it's been dark all day and there's a visible layer of ash on the roads. The Mendocino and Plumas fires got BIG over the last two days.

Here in the Texas hill country things have finally cooled off a bit. It was a gruelling summer and once my gear is on my clothes are soaked through. I bought an Olympia mesh jacket that is nice but I am a one piece roller. Years ago I bought an Olympia summer mesh riding suit and for me it is the perfect set up. I commute to work and ride home late night and the 3m reflective material on this suit lights up like a lamp when headlights hit it. I can step right into it with my dress clothes on from work. My favourite part is if I go down my jacket won’t peel off of me AND I don’t have to deal with a delegate piece of gear (pants) the moon is shinning well last few days and I like that because I can see deer prowling and there are MANY. The speed limit on the canyon road out to my work is 50mph I rise home going 30mph all the way through the canyon. I just think about being on a bicycle and how even if I am only going 30mph I still get where I am going fairly quickly and if I go the pace I know I am not gonna get murdered by deer. It is nice to carve that canyon going 60-70mph during the day though. I feel like I am cheating life when I am blessed enough to get to go on two nice rides a day. Ride safe everybody

I have been lucky to ride 1000kms from Barcelona to the Bardenas Reales desert in Navarra Spain. A amazing ride mostly offroad, with a lot of rain, mud and fun, with temperatures from 3C to 25C.. Nobbies were useless as the mud was too sticky . Falling a few times was totally worth it. 3 days of fun.

From the last stop before Antarctica. Pissing with rain, strong wind and really cold. Snow down to 500m.....and this supposed to be spring? No riding today!

I am loving the cold weather, getting up in the morning is hard during winter.

I just returned from Mendocino County, CA. I was at an elevation of 1800 feet. I was stunned by the quantity of dead pine trees. I have never seen anything like this. We are having an extended drought. If a fire starts, run. There was very little tall grass, no rain. Fires in past years were grass fires, this year they will be forest fires.

Unfortunately, I think you are right on with your prediction. And it is likely worse in some areas of the Serra foothills where huge number of trees have died for various reasons.

I fear we are just days away from the "last" ride of 2021 here in northern Kentucky, USA.

Yesterday the daytime temperature was around 36F, and we had the first snow flakes wafting around in the air (none on the ground).

We are going to have one last round of nice weather beginning tomorrow - with the afternoon temperatures for the next 3 days forecast to be 61, 66, 61....then 43 for the daytime high on the 4th day.

After this week things will get colder, wetter and darker! The winter will be spent mounting new tires and doing cleanup and maintenance so the bikes will be ready to go when April arrives!

The weather station at our house says that we have surpassed last years rain totals. We are in a severe drought. The 2nd atmospheric river of the season is currently passing over the bay area. The first one was stronger but did little to fill the states reservoirs, the water soaked into the parched earth. Hopefully this one will impact the reservoirs positively.

I just picked up 5 inches of rain since yesterday along the coast. I can believe that the SF Bay Area has received more rainfall than all of last year so far - with more to come. I assume the ducks are loving it.

Fox news weather people tonight suggested that California needs 5 or 6 additional atmospheric river events to fill reservoirs in the state. The drought has really hurt our water supplies. The 2 atmospheric rivers we have had are in the 5-7 inch range.

I picked up just over 6" during the past 36 hours. More rain is being predicted tomorrow afternoon and evening and even more days of rain next week. The way things are going, we might get caught up in a month or two.
