So I get to looking closer at my Gerbing T5 gloves and see something for the first time. At the knuckles, there's a split in the leather. I knew the gloves breathed, but I didn't realize there was a split in the leather before. When the fingers are straight, it doesn't really show. It's only when the knuckles are tightened, that you see the splits.

My question is if this is "normal", or if it is from some threads coming loose over time. The gloves get a lot of use for about six months of the year.

You can actually see either the Hipora liner or insulation through the openings where the yellow arrows are pointing.

If you get big rubber overgloves, it's not so noticeable.

That's a thought. I've also kept my handlebar muffs from a previous bike.

I checked the Cycle Gear version of their heated glove liners tonight. My thought was to use those with some winter gloves I have that block the air flowing through. It would take a lot less heat if the gloves weren't passing cold air through them.

Unfortunately, they didn't work well. I put a liner on one hand and the Gerbing T5 on the other. Supposedly, they draw the same amount of power. The T5 heated up. The Cycle Gear liner didn't...or not enough to convince me they could do anything. Plus, they were bulky.

If you don't need any crash protection, then head for the snow ski and outdoor fitting stores and check out rechargeable battery-powered heated gloves. There are lots of those on the market selling for less than motorcycle-specific gloves. I bought a pair of rechargeable lithium battery-powered glove liners and use them under a large pair of winter gloves.

I had a pair of those big industrial looking rubber gloves for winter/rain rides. They did work. Nice back then to not have the leather gloves in the wind.
Like the Totes over boots, they finally rotted out sitting on the shelf over the years.

Since the gloves would only be used when motorcycle riding, I wouldn't get anything without crash protection. I've seen pictures of people's hands after a crash where they didn't use gloves or used cheap gloves. I'd like to be able to use my hands to pick up a fork to eat with still.

Another option now that I don't commute to work anymore, is simply to drive the Subaru Outback. Heated seats are nice, and I can use any kind of gloves in there.

People probably think I'm nuts for riding a motorcycle in the cold and rain when I have a perfectly good car sitting in the driveway...
