Just as I took off to the Chief Joseph Rally two weeks ago on my R1200RS, I got one of those yellow triangles showing a bulb icon and a couple of days later I got another icon showing that my keyless key fob needed a new battery. (A twofer, apparently. ) It turned out that the bulb that burned out was one of my two high beam bulbs, which oddly I had never used since I don't ride anywhere at night that needs a high beam. So I guess vibration killed it.
The 3-year old key fob battery was easy to replace with a stop at a Target store along my route for a CR2032 battery (2 for $12) - once you managed to get the key fob apart to access the battery. Unfortunately, BMW sure didn't make replacing the key fob battery easy. The owner's manual shows that it has a battery door that sides open to access the single battery. However, my key fob had no such door. I had to use a knife blade and a lot of pressure to force the key fob apart at the seam near the key ring end. I thought I was going to break the plastic, but it finally came apart and once that happened the a new battery only took a few seconds to install. Then the fob was reassembled by snapping the parts together with a lot of force until there was a "klick".
Once I returned home from my trip and could read my owner's manual I understood how to replace the headlight bulbs when they burn out. I rode to a local auto parts store and bought a H7 bulb for $18 (less than $6 for a Hella H7 bulb from Amazon). Replacing the bulb consisted of unscrewing a large plastic cover, then disconnecting the electrical connector at the back of the bulb, then unhooking a wire U-shaped clamp that holds the bulb in place, removing the bulb, installing a new one and reversing the process. Not too hard once you unscrew the plastic cover by hand to see what is underneath. However, it does help to have small hands as wedging your hands between the fairing parts and the top of the forks to access the bulb housing is kind of difficult and getting some good lighting in that area before you start work is also worthwhile.
