Gerbings Good Stuff

It was 35 degrees when I headed out for a 200 mile ride yesterday. Plugged in my Gerbings thermostatic controller and had heat in my jacket liner and gloves. "Big deal" right? The big deal is the controller and gear is 20 years old. Bought it in 1999 and it still works like a heated charm. A warm camper is a happy camper.

I don't think they make them like that anymore. My Gerbings jacket liner is even older than that and still works fine. However, sometimes I forget to disconnect the cables when getting off my bike and it seems to happen more often now than it used to.

Yeah, not sure how good the company and their gear is nowadays. They were once upon a time located in Washington State and their reputation was stellar. I got some really good, reliable heated gear from them. But … the last time i ordered gear (heated gloves), they quit heating up after only a few months or so. I did send them back and got a replacement pair that seems to work fine now, but the replacement process time took a while and i got the distinct impression from my telephone calls that the company is not as well-run as it was on the Left Coast. Ah well, time marches on and "progress" continues.

I've had a few vest Gerbing and BMW and others that did the worn out death thing. Just finally broke internal wiring not to work no mo!
Gerbing no longer has a lifetime warranty and I have one that is in need of some repair. pricey little items to fail on a cold day.

Headed out on the F8 this morning to meet some friends for a ride. 37 degress when I left the house and a 40 mile highway run the meetup point. My 11 year old Gerbings served me well - along with the heated grips. Really extend the riding season and for that I am grateful. I thought I did not want/need heated gear at the time. My wife bought the jacket for me for Christmas or a birthday. No more Michelin Man look. Well...maybe...but not due to too many clothing layers.

I bought Gerbing gloves and vests, but I think I'd look to another brand next time. The name is the same, but the ownership changed years ago. People looking for the original Gerbing quality and customer service won't find it in the new products or company.

But electric gear is certainly the way to go when the weather gets cold. Just be sure to bring a backup set of gear in case something happens to the electrical side of your "heated" gear. It won't get just cold...it'll get painful if it isn't working.
