Looks like a nice place for a get together. Does anyone know how far the campground is from the lodge? A short walk?

Guy on the phone said the Willows cabins are 5-7 minutes walk from the Lodge. Here's a map of the grounds.

    http://www.fontanavillage.com/accomm...llagerooms.pdf

The site says the campgrounds are at the base of the Fontana Dam, which isn't on the map, so it would appear to be more than a short walk?

The campground is actually about a 3-5 minute ride from the village at Fontana Dam, as Lesley said.

Got me a room in the inn. It is a nice facility, I was there some years ago when the BMWRA rally was there and the NC & TN state patrol helocopters were out patroling all over. There was a false rumor about that a "motorcycle gang" was coming in to raise hell. All we did was spend money and ride the Dragon.

    Come on down!

Calling the RA a 'motorcycle gang' is like calling Santa Claus an angry thin man bent on world domination.

On the subject of enforcement, be very careful on the Dragon. Some of that fierce level of enforcement is still holding over, and trucks still use it, and the free-for-all atmosphere from when the speed limit was 55 (and couldn't be reached) is a recent memory.

The enforcement is there, but they're fair. Mostly from hearsay, the cops give you what you deserve. You can have a GREAT deal of fun on that road, or any of the local roads, and never come close the breaking the laws. Usually when big trucks etc come through, the police escort the truck through and warn oncoming traffic of the approaching "roadblock". If the police aren't escorting it, often cars or other riders will flag down oncoming traffic. Regardless, we should all right smart & aware in such an unfamiliar area.

This place caters to motorcyclists and car clubs - I would not at all be surprised if in addition to the '10 F800 Global Rally, several other bike or car clubs may also be in the village. I went and scoped this place out for Rob back in September and I saw several Lotus Elise's, as well as the MG club, a Porsche 911 club and the Honda S2000 club in attendance. Saw lots of bikes too, but I can't tell bikes apart to tell you what they were.

The cabins are very spacious and nice. Split one with another person (or 2) and its almost as cheap as the hotel (lodge). I stayed at the Lodge in September, and this time around I rented a cabin.

Did you identify yourself as a member of the BMW F800 Group? If not, there would be no rooms left as we have them all taken.

Do mention BMW, it made the magic happen after I was told, "not room in the inn".

I just phoned and made a reservation....they do have rooms available at the Lodge. May want to call again and make sure they understand it is part of a group event.

I'm beginning to take this personally. I missed last year's rally because I sent in the email form for a room reservation and never received a reply.

If it helps, I spoke with 'Theresa' at Fontana this morning and she had the event information and was very helpful.

I've already tried that. I told them my name was "Dunny" and they said there were no rooms available in a four state radius.

I don't think I can't make it there next October and I was unsuccessful when I called to make sure I couldn't get a reservation for a room. So if you don't see me there its not because I didn't go. Yea.

My wife and I were there for the RA and we will return for the F800 rally. At the time the law enforcement people were operating on the old "Wild One" mode. Although we did not have any trouble, if they searched our bags they would have found only Metamusal and baby asprin. I hope they have been enlightened by now.

Not so fast--those are the two primary ingredients in Geezer Crack. You snort that stuff and it makes you stay awake for as long as seven hours at a time.

It was not any time before the locals realized that their "law enforcment departments" had made some real errors in judgement. The local sheriffs were voted out due to the bad calls and all is well of course unless they find you're breaking the law. Since I havn't seen the Rape & Pillage Seminar appear on the schedule of events, I 'spect they will just do the regular enforcement with a bit of overtime from the guys that are scheduled to have that weekend off.

I'm usually too tired to cause trouble that requires the state national guard to be called in - and they are busy with other duties right now, anyway.

    Just sharing...

This is a photo I took of the pool from the 2nd floor of the Fontana Village Lodge (hotel). The building behind the pool is the "poolside cabanas" Its a beautiful place, with some magnificent, well maintained roads nearby!

Once you make a reservation at the lodge your credit card is charged for the first night and if you cancel you will be charged $50, unless you cancel less than 30 days ahead. In that case you will pay for the first night in full.

Yeah tell me about it! Meanwhile they're making interest off all our deposits!

I reserved a room in the lodge last week, the cost seems fair to me, Fontana Resort is giving us weekday rates for this weekend event, that's a good deal. The $50.00 registration fee also a bargain, were getting a lot for our $$$ here. I generally don't attend group events but decided to participate in this one due to the great riding in the Ga/NC area.

A lot of the more popular hotels are starting to ask for deposits that are not refundable. They are tired of setting aside 30 or 40 rooms and then the rains come. 70% of the riders drop out. With the economy as bad as it is, I don't blame them.

Lets try not to make a fuss. Remember this is motorcycle heaven. It will take 3 days for the smile to disappear.

I don't mind the deposit, though I do consider 1 nights full rent quite a healthy deposit. The '09 Rally got a lot of cancellations last minute because of rain Friday. If it takes a hotel deposit to keep that from happening again, its totally worth it.

Beginning of October is satistacally the driest time of the year, though with that 'global warming' thing happening it might change. Anyway, for the last few years it has held as true.

Just tried calling to see if any rooms remain at the lodge, apparently they are having a power failure at the facility right now so they can't take reservations

They did have a power failure yesterday but I called today and made my reservation, no problem. Rob are we doing rally registrations, or is it the same as it was the first year, just show up? Thanks by the way for changing the dates from the Moto GP dates!!

Just reserved my room. Hope to see some of you Brits there, some other world travellers, and of course everyone I met at last years rally.

Just made my reservation. Opted for small cabin...easier loading/unloading. First trip to this area. Did BMWMOA in 2009 and rode the Snake, hope the Dragon is as challenging!

    See you there,

Which again makes me wonder why they told me they didn't have any when I called months ago.

Probably because you didn't identify yourself as part of the group. The 'group' has just about every remaining room for the weekend. If you don't identify yourself as part of the BMW F800 Riders Group, you wont get a room.
