this morning I listened to the radio this symphony...
I know the "titan" very well because I spent lots of time to study how the sound grows up from the silence and when I listen to it I recall in my mind the full score... the initial magma sound gradually becomes a definite sound and the main theme of the symphony slowly rises from the masterly orchestration of mahler, but the most important thing is that you notice the sound as "pre-existent". the silence is a place full of sound where the sound dies and then gets a new life. this is what mahler shows us with the incipit of his first symphony: a strange place called "silence".
I love mahler's music!

webern's "variationen für klavier" op. 27 is a twelve tone composition. in this first movement the series is displayed in a strange way: if you see the first four measures you notice that the twelve notes make four curls, not really in an chord sequence because the time value of the first two notes is different from the third note and the time shift make a curl, the second "chord" is a mirrored image of the first and so on. webern's series affect also many others composition parameters (metrics division, agogia, dynamics...), but not always with the same severity he put on twelve note series and its development. the "pianissimo" range is quite usual, even if th.w. adorno used to call anton webern "the triple p composer", here you never see a triple p, but the dynamic range give us, anyway, the idea of the silence, the same silence of mahler's "titan" incipit. webern's music is view of the human misery from an incredible mountain height, so high that seem to be above the sky... sometime this view can hurt.

do you think that music (or any other kind o art) should always be reassuring? twelve tone composition is something similar to the abstraction in the visual arts, it happens quite often when you watch an abstract paint that you feel "shaken", it could hurt you sometimes, and this happens because you have not the "figure" that helps you to interpret what you see: abstraction needs another approach to be "decoded" and if you are not used to manage it you could feel helpless... as if you're running naked over an unknown land. the quartet has two movements (but this youtube video is divided in four parts, maybe because of its lenght), this composition opens the last nono's creative period, it prelude to "prometeo", a wonderful "opera" in which the only actor is the music, or better the sound. if you want to listen to "prometeo" I can post it, but you'll miss the physicality of the sound that is achieved by the "live electronics" developed at friburg (it is a big hardware device that runs a complicated program and needs an sound engineer – not a simple technician, but usually a graduated engineer – to be used) that can move the sound over five different heights and by the positions of the various players and singers. not an easy listening, after two hours of the live listening of "prometeo" you feel very "proved", but, believe me, peaceful and happy.

erin, maybe the reason you feel in an empty house is just because your approach is influenced by four centuries of tonal music, a different way to listen to that music could turn the "bad memories" into good thoughts... sometimes we need to get our time to change our opinions, and sometime we don't change opinions, and both things are right.

nothing is so far from "the type of people [to] avoid at parties" as this kind of music... it is probably the best lonely place where to get lost, but you must like loneliness to appreciate it, or you just need to be in a particular attitude.

their name (although the emblematic image of the street signals showing one direction for joy st and one direction for division st) comes from the troops of prostitutes sent to the german front during the second world war to... enjoy the soldiers. I think this is their most popular song:
my music preferences are rather strange... because I can listen that kind of music and then this:
federico incardona was a friend of mine (he died prematurely from throat cancer, the same disease that killed puccini, I know it's not very important... but I love "turandot"), his composition method is quite similar to the twelve tone composition, but he used twenty-four tones (each tone is divided in four parts: monesis, diesis, triesis and the entire tone) and the seriality is not always applied. in this piece you can also listen some "blowing bottles", yes just bottles working as flutes and oboes.

Guido.... the Federico Incardona was okay!, maybe has to do with being a different day...but I did like it.
I have alot of Joy Division vinyl in storage from my Art School days, they were great, I also have alot of 'rough trade' label recordings of new emerging bands of the 80's which was popular within a certain eclectic group of people. I was/am a big fan collector of John Cale, Brian Eno, Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, Pere Ubu, King Crimson. Plus very old blues, up to the poetic moody Bob Dylan thrown in for good measure.
One of my boss's at work is a keen drummer and loves his music, he loves the likes of Pat Metheny and cannot understand how I cannot appreciate this artist, partly its because his attitude is you have no appreciation of music if you don't like refined perfect crisp sounding instrument playing, and mostly because it sounds like elevator music to me.
I hate when music is to polished.

some of you know that I am a musicologist, well one of the the musicologists work is to write the composers work catalog, for example, mozart works are numbered by a "k" (konzert für klavier n. 21 in c-dur k. 467 is so called because it was numbered by ludwig ritter von köchel). I wrote the catalog of federico's work. I remember that was a very hard job because federico changed the name of his compositions every day and, worse, he changed the compositions themselves, all his work was a sort of "work in progress" till he died. anyway, that was a wonderful work because federico incardona was a very strange person: he was able to spend all night talking to a homeless on the road, as well he could hold a speech in an international conference and I was the only musicologist (usually very formal people) here who was able to work at nighttime as well as daytime, to spend time on the road as well to work at university or at the publisher's studio, the only musicologist here who can spend lots of time with federeico incardona without falling in bad argue with him. I must say I have a debt with federico incardona: he showed me an unknown world of sounds, he taught me to listen mahler, twelve tone composers, luigi nono... but the most important thing he taught me was that the music must be free of prejudices, and that the most severe rule can often ensure the real freedom in arts.
erin it's strange you like "malor me bat", which its subtitle is "omaggio a luigi nono" (tribute to luigi nono), this piece is written on a musical idea of johannes ockeghem (a composer of XV century) studied by luigi nono, the bottles that you listen are (as roberto fabbriciani, a flutist who is the best nono's music performer, said) «the missing sounds of nono's "prometeo"», the sounds that nono couldn't find for his masterpiece, even if he felt he needed them.
just for notice frank zappa used to insert very often in his songs pieces written using the twelve tone composition... quite strange for a rocker!
