My work "history." Not all that interesting but I'll do my best here.

Currently Retired, but otherwise, in rough chronological order, some omissions, and occasionally interspersed with various periods of ne'er-do-well (an activity for which I have great talent) :

    High School/Odd Jobs
    5 years military service
    Electronics Tech (RCA, Cape Canaveral)
    Marine Electrician
    Cabinetmaker (self employed)
Boat Carpenter (Whiticar Boat Works, Stuart, FL, and others)
    Steeplejack (RCA, Cape Canaveral)
    Cabinetmaker/Furnituremaker (self employed)
Computer Programmer (U of AR Med School)
Computer (*nix) Systems and Network Admin/Systems Programmer and part-time faculty for U of AR at Little Rock (18yrs)

I tried taking college classes but found that they mostly just interfered with my education. So the main of my (various) education has been (and still is (post-doc)) at the School of Hard Knocks.

Other things I do to amuse myself, beside motorcycling, are blacksmithing, jewelrymaking, woodworking, sailing and photography. I'm not very good at any of it but then,,, I don't have to be.

My military/career/personal travels have taken me as far North as Thule, Greenland, as far south as Ascension Island (South Atlantic), East to Germany, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Belgium, France and Italy and as far West as Adak, AK and Hawaii. Including, but not limited to Newfoundland, Labrador, Bahamas, Turks and Caicos Islands, West Indies, Trinidad/Tobago, Mexico and a few places in the US.

Also, I have committed matrimony four times (finally got it right though!)

    Motorcycles past and present:
1937 Harley-Davidson `61 (it was 4yrs older than me when I got it at age 17)
    1953(?) Harley-Davidson 165
    1955(?) Zundapp KS601 with sidecar
    1965(?) Yamaha YDS-3
1965(?) Benelli 350 single (Wards Riverside)
    1973 BMW R60/5
    1978 BMW R80/7 *
    2006 Yamaha XT225 *
    2006 Suzuki DR650 *
    2008 BMW F800ST
    2009 BMW F650GS *
    *=currently owned
Examples of some of the above bikes can be seen here

i dig the way you worded that. has experience gained perspective?

some serious traveling there! where was your favorite?

in my limited experience, there is no cure for wanderlust. more travel can only appease it.

    Yes.

I guess if I had my pick of any of those places it would probably be Italy. But, it would be a tough call. Labrador and Greenland, however, would be easy to scratch off the short list.

Nice shot. Unfortunately, my limited travels in the Pacific have only been in the top half.

Formerly on a Lahar Grey F800S, then after 47,000 happy miles it was traded in for a new Midnight Black F800ST, which was more or less converted back to an S. And now I'm on a brand new R1200RS, which is rather awesome! I'll still stick around if you'll have me, though, as my wife is now on the F800...

I am a liquor salesman / asst mgr. We run a huge store called the LCBO ( in Ontario Canada ). These stores are province ( state owned ) owned and are a Monopoly.

We are recession proof, and very busy all the time. We do not have any competition except the odd wine store that can only sell one company,s portfolio.

In other words, their selection is very miniscule and no one shops there.

We are a major source of revenue for the government of Ontario.

Unlike the United States and most European countries, in Ontario, if you want to buy booze, you have to go the a gov. run and controlled store called the Liquor Control Board of Ontario ( LCBO ).

By the way, I would say that the LCBO is a world leader in social responsibility.

That is how the LCBO was founded. It was founded after prohibition , and was founded on the principles of social responsibility. That is what the mentality is in Ontario and that is why it is still privately owned and controlled .

Many would claim that Ontario is behind the times. But in social responsibility, we are world leaders.

So Luxamor ... Are you saying that the sale of alcohol other than bulk beer is state run and controlled or is it just the regulation that is state controlled.

Is the liquor sales a Monopoly ?

I'm not an expert on the topic, but you can find more info here.
We buy liquor and wine at state stores, cases and kegs of beer at licensed distributors.

Hi Wendy. The way booze is sold in Australia, is the way alcohol seems to be sold almost everywhere.

Except some states in the US and some provinces in Canada. Ontario being one of the provinces where alcohol sales are controlled mostly by the government. A near monopoly.

Any brewery or wine producer can sell their own product , on site, and special licences were sold and issued long ago where they can open a small store and sell only their own products and nothing else.

So , in essence, they are only promoting themselves and they do not have any variety , what so ever.

In addition, they are allowed to sell their product to private restaurants, bars etc.

The Liquor Control Board of Ontario was founded on the principles of social responsibility, just after prohibition was abolished. That today remains the main reason why , deregulation is moving very very slow. However; I do see public opinion swaying more and more as the years move on.

The LCBO is a major revenue source for our provincial goverment. It is a cash cow.
For the last ten years, the LCBO has turned in record profits to the treasurer.

Anyone interested in the effects of privitizing alcohol sales should goole " alcohol privitization - the Alberta experience "

The drain on social services, and the social ills that it has caused, far outweighted, any benefits that they got out of it.
Alberta, has the highest consumption of alcohol, per capita, of any other province in Canada.

    Cheers !

    ps Welcome to the forum

I'm the Operations Manager of a Small Natural Foods Store just down the street from Stanford University. I was already a bit of a hippy before I started but working here has definitely opened my eyes to the importance of Local and Organic food.
In 13 years here I've done almost everything, and now I run the place, and they've been good to me.

I can verify that they are very busy all the time. My company services and maintains all the LCBO store automatic doors in the Toronto area. They are by far my most important customer!

Was that your bike in the picture I saw at the Markham location? It's not often I see a F800ST picture on an office wall.

    Awesome thread!

Its amazing how many of us share a similar line of work! I work as an audio visual engineer, and seem to specialise in presentation systems for large hotels.

I started out doing live sounds after having been an orchestral/multi percussionist and "crossed the mic" to start doing more and more installation work. I have also started to do more and more system control programming, my first big project got onto the front cover of an international magazine!

I got married last year after 13 years together, and then got my f800st after I failed my DAS twice! Having been riding for a year and a half, I put a deposit down on my f800 and didn't tell them I hadn't got my license as yet. I had to phone and delay the delivery until I passed my test! I've lurked on this forum since the first spy shots of the f800st came out and have loved the bike since I first saw it!

Also wonder if I am the youngest f800 rider at 27!

Awesome! I was getting worried as I have enough friends who wind me about about riding a BMW. Just recently met some who asked what I rode when he saw my helmet, and after telling him, his reply was "I'm sure its very errr reliable"

All of the other f800 riders I have met have been older than me..... to say the very least

I triage and decipher medical hieroglyphics to assess and validate medication orders for the right patient who should have the appropriate medications at appropriate doses via appropriate routes taken at appropriate frequencies assessing/avoiding allergies, serious adverse reactions, drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, drug-disease interactions, dispense medications, suggest medications, provide drug information, counsel patients, procure medications, do medication consults, deal with pharmacokinetics, compound medications, help prevent medication errors, do systems analysis for medication errors, teach and mentor pharmacy students and residents, do research - among other things...

In short, I'm just a clinical pharmacist.

I also like to indulge in various atavistic activities.

I am an artist (painter). However to bring home the bacon I am an art installer and rigger and transporter. I teach art at colleges when I can afford to do so.

Me, I work in the medical field. I install ICD's , that is Implantable Cardiac Defibrillators. When I'm not doing that, I fix clogged arteries in the heart and legs. I grew up around racing and I started riding and racing when I was about 14. I know that is late by todays standards, but I had to buy all my own bikes.

As a recipient of a quadruple heart bypass in November 2000 I'm glad to know you Don.

Keep up the good work giving others a second chance.

Way to go Karen! All my dogs (five in past 25 years) have been rescues! Most recent, last week a two month old Rotty Mix.

I would've loved to have been a Police Officer but I live very near London and I just didn't fancy getting tied up in pointless demonstration riots.

I would've set my heart on getting into Traffic and obviously on two wheels other than that a dog handler would've also suited me down to the ground.

I rescued my dog, a chocolate Labrador, rescued from from a Pedigree breeder .

That's a really tough, but rewarding job, Karen. I'm not sure if I could cope with some of the horror stories you must encounter, though.

I have, for my sins, been in IT for almost 40 years but hopefully the finish line is in sight and will be able to retire in 2011. Spend more time with my ST?

I work at a Nuclear Pharmacy as a Cyclotron (particle accellerator) operator and a few synthesis boxes which combined make FDG a drug used to see cancer in the body. I've been in the field for 8 years now and have learned a heck of alot working with this stuff !

I am a Floodplain Consultant. I retired from the City of Houston as the Floodplain Manager and was there for almost 11 years. Now I help people with their floodplain stuff and also help with their insurance claims. Most people do not know about the appraisal portion of an insurance policy. If you disagree with your insurance company on a payout or how much something is damaged or what an item is worth, you can write your insurance company a letter and ask them to go into the apprasals portion of your policy. You pick an appraiser (someone to tell your side of the claim and what it is worth to the insured) and the insurance company picks one also. Both appraisers pick an umpire and he ends up signing an award of what he thinks the claim is worth. It is called an umpire's award. It really is cool and if anyone of you have any questions, please feel to contact me and I will help out.

After civilly working away for 7 years as a secretary, I decided to high-tail it back to school to make something of myself. Now I'm a survey drafter dealing with oil & gas land surveys (well leases, pipe lines, that kind of thing), and I love my new job - best of all, our office has a "bikers only" parking area in back, and about 4 of us regularly ride in, with another 5 or so fair-weathering it.

When not at work, I'm usually getting my exercise (forget the gym!) by training my Shelties in agility or sheep herding.

I am a family med physician. I currently am doing a fair amount with drug addictions and their treatments. Also am an AME (aviation medical examiner) do flight physicials for pilots. As I grew up in a very large truck garden operation I now have 104 acres that my brother is farming. I worked in the farm shop and have extensive expirience with heavy equipment repairs and maintained the fleet of vehicles they had. I have my own 2500sq ft shop with a lift for vehicle repairs.

I'm really interested in this thread and people's lives and values, which come across so clear. I'm a consultant psychiatrist and work with seriously mentally ill people in the inner city. It's tough but awesomely inspiring at the same time. I've also done alot of teaching and training and co-written 2 textbooks. Now that my youngest son has just turned 21 I felt I could take some risks in life and give myself some challenges. Don't know anything about mechanical things but aim to learn. Felt I needed to move out of the comfort zone. Love the bike, the wind in my face, having to think to stay alive on the morning commute.

I am an Information Systems Administrator for the Biological Engineering Department at an Institute of Technology located in Cambridge, MA. In short, I'm their "computer guy".

Outside of work I am a passionate about sharing music as a DJ, formerly out and about in clubland (not so much anymore) and presently on college radio (still in that game). In fact, this Thursday 8-12midnight I'll be OTA 88.1FM http://wmbr.org for streaming. If you're curious, I keep track of what I play (when I get around to updating it) on my website http://aquabahn.com .

Here's a snap of me and the girl(best)friend from last winter.

lets see I got a new position about 6 months ago so i am now the manager for switch/data enginerring for VZW in the Washington Baltimore Market. If your VZW cell phone is working it is my network that makes it happen. i spent 8 years prior to that with VZW doing the Operations side of it in the Washington DC area. Between Hurricanes and 9/11 and Obama's inaugaration I have seen just about the worst and best of our company. It is quite a change between Operations and Enginerring. Instead of making it happen I am now 6 to 12 months ahead in the planning and executing. Since we are talking about pets i have a 10 year old pound rescued Border Collie and a 4 year old rescued Great Dane.
